Solution

If you register your domain with only a single toplevel-suffix (e.g. .com), competitors can reserve the same domain with a different topleve-suffics (e.g. .net) and steal visitors from your website. This also applies to domain names that include special characters. Avoid it. Reserve your domain in different spellings and top-level-suffixes.

  • If your domain consists of more than a single word (e.g. my-domain.com), you should register a version with and one without dash (e.g. mydomain.com).
  • Umlaut domains and domains with special characters (e.g. españa.es) should also be registered as a transcription (e.g. espana.es). Many browsers and mail clients cannot process special characters in e-mail addresses correctly. Your main domain should be the one without special characters. The alternative spelling with umlauts or special characters can be registered in addition to your main domain and can then be redirected to the main domain.
  • Register all important toplevel-suffixes (.eu, .com,.net, .org, .info, .biz), so that visitors who do not remember your website's address properly can still find it easily.
  • If you offer your services in other countires, also reserve the matching country domain (e.g. .mx for Mexico, .ca for Canada, .eu for European Union).

It is often cheaper to reserve additional domain names than to take a competitor to court over a name dispute.
