Symptom

You experience one or more of these symptoms:

  • Outlook connects to your mailbox by IMAP, it display the incoming mail folder, but the folder seems to be empty.
  • You may see some mails, but these mails cannot be moved, copied or deleted.
  • Sent mails are not stored in the "Sent Items" folder or the like.

Cause

The IMAP server branches mail folders from a root directory /INBOX. The "root folder path" in Outlook is empty by default. Outlook looks for mails starting in the / path, but as mails are only visible from the INBOX path, the root folder path in Outlook must be set to INBOX.

Solution

1. Start Outlook and open the account settings of the mail account.
2. Click on the "Further settings" button.
3. Click on the "Expanded" tab.
4. Enter INBOX into the root folder path input box.
5. Save the new settings.

Unfortunately, Microsoft has changed the click paths and dialogues in Outlook frequently. Therefore, it is possible that your approach is as follows:

1. Start Outlook and open the account settings of the relevant mail account.
2. Click on the IMAP mail account in the list of mail accounts.
3. Click on "Change ..." in the list header.
4. In the "Root folder path" line, enter: INBOX
5. Save the new settings.
