Solution

Favicons are not a function of the web server, but of your website. You need to add a configuration to your web page and upload the favicon file (the image with the icon in .ico, .gif or .png format) to your website.

After you have uploaded the favicon file, add two references to it to the … section of your website:

The first reference is the standard, the second is needed for some versions of Internet Explorer that do not understand the standard. For example, if the favicon.ico file is located in the document root directory of your website:

You can omit the „type“ parameter, if the file format is .ico. When you use a .gif or .png image instead, you need to add the MIME type in the „type“ parameter, for example

for .ico: image/x-icon
for .gif: image/gif
for .png: image/png

The image file must meet these conditions:

For .ico: 16x16 or 32x32 px and 16 to 16.7 million colors
For .gif and .png: 16x16 px and 256 colors

In order for the browser to load and display a new or updated favicon, you need to clear the browser cache and re-start the browser.
