Symptom

You want to collect all mails that are sent to any address of your domain or you do not want that, but want to limit mail reception to the addresses that really exist in your domain.

Solution

The function that catches all mails that are sent to any domain addresses including non-existent recipients is called “catch-all”. Catch-all was popular at the beginning of the world wide web, because domain owners did not need to worry to miss mails that were accidentally sent to wrong recipients. Spammer soon started abusing this to direct mails to randomly formatted mail addresses of a domain. Due to the huge number of unsolicited mails most almost no users are still using catch-all. Instead, most users try to limit mails to the recipients that really exist in a domain.

Bitpalace discourages the use of catch-all, because the amount of spam mails that you will receive when using catch-all, will strongly increase.

To control catch-all settings, follow these steps:

1) Log-in to your web space control panel.

2) Click the “Mail” tab.

3) Under the “Mail” tab, click the “Mail Settings” tab.

4) Click on the domain name of which you want to edit the e-mail settings. If you have only leased a single domain, you will only see that one link.

5) In the section “What to do with mail for non-existent users” select an option. We recommend to not to send a bounce message, because the number of incoming spams will be very high and a bounce message will only lead to a high server load with no use. The best setting for almost every occasion is to “Reject” mails. If you want to use catch-all against the recommendation, choose “Forward to address” and enter the address of your domain where mails shall be forwarded to.

6) Click the “OK” button.
