Symptom

You want to use software that needs access to system directories. The PHP open_basedir limitation of the web space does not allow access.

Cause

Open_basedir restricts the access of your PHP instance to the directories belonging to your web space. For that reason directories outside of your own web space cannot be accessed.

Solution

Since all the directories belonging to your web space are already accessible to your PHP scripts, the open_basedir limit cannot be extended any further. Access to directories outside of your web space is not possible for security reasons. There are hardly any applications that need access to additional directories. All common web space applications including most content management systems, shops, boards, etc. are working perfectly within your own web space.

If you are using an application that needs access beyond the limits of your own web space directory, you must rent at least one virtual private server (vServer, VPS) with root privileges.
