Symptom

Currently all e-mails sent to mail@domain.xx arrive in your mailbox A. You want these e-mails to arrive in mailbox B. You want to change the routing from the linux console.

Solution

1. Log-in to your Linux console by SSH and switch into superuser mode by the su command.

2. Open the file /etc/mail/virtusertable for editing, e.g.

vi /etc/mail/virtusertable

3. Change the existing line

mail@domain.xx   A

to
mail@domain.xx   B

4. Save the changes, e.g.

[ESC] :qw! [Enter]

5. The virtusertable file is a human readible version of the routing table. In order for the server to use the file, it must be converted into a database format.

Either (on Bitpalace Small Enterprise Servers)
vnewvirtmaps

or (on other Linux servers or if the vnewvirtmaps command is unavailable)
makemap hash /etc/mail/virtusertable.db < /etc/mail/virtusertable

6. At this point on Bitpalace Small Enterprise Servers the new routing is already active. On some other servers Sendmail will still need to be restarted, so that the updated virtusertable.db file will be read:

FreeBSD
cd /etc/mail
make restart

Linux
service sendmail restart
